Product Overview
The following discussions primarily describe the circular gravity
thickening processes, design and operational information. In gravity thickening,
sludge is concentrated by the gravity-induced settling and compaction
of sludge solids with simultaneous dewatering or decanting. The theory govering
gravity thickening varies with the nature of the solids thickened
This is a physical opertion in which sludge is stirred for relatively
long periods, 8 to 12 hours, in a thickenr unit, for the purpose of forming channels
or passageways in the sludge mass to permit escape of occlued water and to form a
more cohesive mass of sludge flocs with reduced moisture content.
Thickening may be carried out in a tank equipped with a special mechanism, similar
to a clarifier. The thickening units consited of mechanisms with a series of
upright chambers, called pickets, attached to the raking arms.
The succesful operation of this method of thickening depends upon the continuous
addition and mixing of dissolved oxygen-bearing water with the dilute sludge from
the secondary clarifiers and the over flow of excess sludge from the digester, the
continued flocculation of this aerobic mixture by interfacial contact, followed by a
settling of the sludge particles and the retention of the settled material for
a sufficient length of time to cause an appreciable compacting of the sludge particles.
All of these successive phases take place in the sam tank, or with the addition of a
pre-mix basin. The compacting action occurs in the sludge blanket or mass in the bottom
levels of the tank by two means: 1) by compression due to weight of the solids themselves and
2) by the release of occluded water due to the continuous passage of the arms of the
mechanism through the sludge mass which tends to open up channels in the accumulation
permitting the water to escape.
